1. Why “audit” needs to mean something specific in Web3

By now, everyone knows the headline numbers. In 2023 Web3 saw hundreds of security incidents with losses well above $1.7B, and in 2025 the average amount lost per hack climbed above $5.3M, an increase of more than 60% compared to the year before.

Looking at postmortems, the same patterns repeat: broken access control, flawed business logic, unsafe integrations, upgrade mishaps. These are exactly the things audits are supposed to reduce. Yet annual security reports still find that many exploited contracts were either never audited, audited only superficially, or deployed in a form that no longer matched the audited code. One 2023 report found that only 10% of exploited contracts had undergone any form of audit, and only about half of those audits actually covered the code that was later hacked.

So the question for a founder or protocol team is not “Do I have an audit PDF?” It is “Did we actually go through a rigorous security review that deserved to be called an audit?” To answer that, it helps to know what a serious audit process looks like from the inside.

2. The structure of an in-depth Web3 audit

Every company has its own flavour, but most mature smart contract audits follow a similar backbone.

Scoping and intake
The audit starts with boundaries. The firm needs a frozen commit hash, a list of contracts in scope, and a clear description of what the system is meant to do. Good auditors will ask for architecture diagrams, protocol docs, economic design notes, and links to previous audits if they exist. The scoping phase decides how deep they can realistically go in the allocated time.

Documentation review and threat modeling
Before touching code, auditors try to understand the design and the intended threat model. That includes who the privileged actors are, what assumptions exist about oracles, bridges, external protocols, and which failure modes would be fatal. Teams that skip threat modeling often waste review time on low-impact details while missing systemic issues like privilege escalation or economic attacks.

Static analysis and automated checks
Tools are not a replacement for humans, but they are good at catching obvious patterns: uninitialised variables, unchecked return values, unsafe arithmetic, and known anti-patterns. Modern tools can plug directly into the SWC registry, which classifies dozens of common Solidity weaknesses with identifiers like SWC-100 (Function Default Visibility) or SWC-107 (Reentrancy).

Manual review and property-driven testing
The real work is line-by-line manual review. Auditors step through business logic, simulate flows in their heads, and try to break assumptions. On complex systems they may also write custom tests, fuzzers, or formal properties that must always hold (for example “total supply must equal sum of balances” or “collateral must never go negative after liquidation”). OWASP’s Smart Contract Security Verification Standard (SCSVS) is one of the public frameworks teams use to structure these checks.

Reporting, remediation and re-test
An in-depth audit does not end with a single PDF. The initial report is usually followed by a remediation phase, where the team applies fixes and the auditors re-test the code. Some firms issue a final report explicitly marking which findings were fixed, which were accepted as risk, and which remain open.

From the outside, all of this might be summarised as “we were audited,” but the difference in risk between a quick, tool-only scan and a multi-week, standards-driven manual review is enormous.

3. Standards and severity: how good firms think

Mature audit shops try not to reinvent the wheel each time. Instead they anchor their work in public standards and shared taxonomies.

One example is the SWC registry, a community-maintained catalogue of smart contract weakness classes aligned with the CWE taxonomy. It gives auditors a common language for describing issues like integer overflow, reentrancy, and access control flaws, and it provides test cases for each weakness.

Another example is OWASP SCSVS, which defines layers of assurance for smart contracts, from basic security for low-risk contracts up to high-assurance requirements for systemically important protocols. SCSVS explicitly calls out the need for architecture review, threat modeling, secure coding practices and robust testing as part of the verification process.

On top of that, most firms use severity scales influenced by broader security standards. A common pattern is to assess each finding by:

Likelihood: how easy is it to trigger in practice
Impact: what happens to funds and protocol integrity if it is exploited
Severity: an overall label such as Critical, High, Medium, Low, or Informational

Academic work on smart contract auditing has explicitly recommended this structure to standardise risk ratings. OpenZeppelin, for example, describes its reports as listing “all found issues” with these severity categories and including step-by-step remediation guidance.

When you read an audit, you want to see that same discipline: a clear connection from issue to impact, and from impact to severity, instead of vague language like “could be problematic.”

4. What you should expect to see as a client

From a founder’s perspective, an in-depth audit should leave you with more than a logo to paste on your landing page.

A solid audit report will typically include:

Scope and context: the commit hash, contracts and modules in scope, and what was explicitly out of scope
Assumptions and threat model: how the system is supposed to be used, what is considered trusted, and which economic or governance risks were consciously accepted
Methodology: a short outline of how the review was conducted (manual review, tools, tests, simulations), sometimes with references to standards such as OWASP SCSVS or SWC
Findings table: issues clearly grouped by severity with descriptions, impact analysis, and concrete remediation suggestions
Timeline and status: when the review happened and which findings have been fixed, re-tested, accepted as risk, or remain open

Some reports also summarise key risk themes, such as “privileged roles require tighter constraints” or “cross-chain assumptions depend on off-chain validator sets.” That kind of synthesis is often more useful for long-term security than any individual bug.

Just as important as what is inside the report is what it does not promise. Good auditors are explicit about limitations. They cannot guarantee the absence of all vulnerabilities, they cannot control future code changes, and they cannot replace operational security around keys, governance and infrastructure. Security reports from 2023 and 2024 repeatedly point out that many incidents hit unaudited or poorly audited projects, but also that some high-profile hacks occurred in codebases that had been audited without fully integrating the recommendations.

An honest audit is not a certificate of invincibility. It is a structured snapshot of risk at a point in time.

5. Time and money: realistic expectations on cost and duration

There is no single price tag for “an audit.” Cost depends on complexity, lines of code, language, and how many researchers will look at the project. Public pricing guides and industry analyses put typical ranges roughly like this:

simple ERC-20 or similar tokens: around 3000–4000 USD
medium-complexity dApps and DeFi protocols: roughly 10,000–20,000 USD
complex ecosystems, rollups or cross-chain protocols: 50,000+ USD

Audit durations for significant protocols often run from two to sixteen weeks, especially when they include remediation and re-testing.

These numbers can look painful to a lean team, until you compare them to the cost of failure. CertiK’s 2025 security report notes that average losses per Web3 hack have reached into the multi-million range, with some individual incidents wiping out hundreds of millions of dollars and destroying projects outright. Independent ROI analyses estimate that security investments in audits can deliver returns in the tens to hundreds-to-one when you factor in avoided catastrophic loss and the reputational damage that comes with it.

The economically rational way to think about audits is not “is this invoice big?” but “is this a reasonable insurance premium for what we are putting at risk?”
