When people talk about “Web3 security,” they often focus on only one layer. Retail users think about wallets and phishing links. Engineers think about reentrancy and access control. Infra providers think about bridges, custodians, and regulation.

Attackers do not care about those distinctions. In 2024, roughly 2.2 billion dollars were stolen from crypto platforms, across more than three hundred hacking incidents, and that figure does not even include purely off chain fraud. In 2025, early data suggests total theft climbed above 3.4 billion dollars, with a single exchange compromise accounting for more than one and a half billion. The only way to make sense of this is to treat security as layered. There is the individual with a wallet. There is the team building a protocol or product. And there is the wider ecosystem of bridges, custodians and infrastructure that everyone sits on. Each layer has its own failure modes and its own set of simple actions that reduce risk dramatically.

Layer 1: the individual wallet user

For an individual, most catastrophic losses still begin with something very mundane: a seed phrase typed into a fake site, malware on the device, a rushed signature on an unread transaction, or a bad approval to a malicious contract. Layer 2: the product team and protocol

At the team layer, the attack surface shifts from one wallet to an entire system. Instead of one contract, there is an interlocking set of modules, external dependencies, and off-chain services that hold secrets or control access.

First, write down trust assumptions. Every protocol sits on a set of beliefs: who can pause contracts, who can change parameters, which oracles can be wrong, and how wrong they are allowed to be. A simple document listing each privileged role, each external dependency, and each invariant that must hold under normal operation already improves things.

It also means adopting formal security reviews that go beyond contract logic and into operational procedures, network architecture, and governance controls.

At this layer, prevention looks like circuit breakers, threshold signatures, independent monitoring, and clear plans for halting, communicating, and recovering when something goes wrong. The ecosystem depends on these actors choosing to be conservative in exactly the places where others are tempted to optimize only for speed or convenience.

Pulling the layers together

The important thing is that these three layers are connected. An individual who keeps their wallet safe and signs carefully can still lose funds if a protocol they trust is designed without clear invariants. A carefully audited protocol can still be undermined if an infrastructure provider with broad custody is compromised. A well designed bridge can still be abused if end users are trained to click through anything.

Useful prevention acknowledges that reality and does not lean too heavily on any single defense. Individuals focus on device hygiene, key storage, and careful signing. Teams focus on assumptions, key management, and contract audits. Infra providers focus on blast radius, monitoring, and conservative custody models. Each does what it can control while assuming that other layers will occasionally fail.

The upside is that each layer has a short list of actions that pays off quickly. You do not need to solve the entire Web3 security problem. You just need to stop making the cheapest attacks easy.
