TL;DR:

20% by 2030: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warns of roughly a 1-in-5 chance that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could appear by 2030 and break today’s ECDSA keys. This is not science fiction; we have serious lead time to prepare.
Ethereum at risk: Any Ethereum account that has ever sent a transaction has exposed its public key on-chain. Once Q-day arrives, all those accounts (and any reused addresses) could be drained by Shor’s algorithm attacks.
PQ solutions exist: Post-quantum signature schemes are mature and standardized. NIST recently approved lattice-based (Dilithium, Falcon) and hash-based (SPHINCS+) signatures. These “quantum-safe” algorithms can replace ECDSA, but they require larger keys and different verification logic.
Plan migration now: Experts urge “cryptographic agility”, start integrating PQ cryptography today while researching ideal schemes. For example, new EVM account types or multi-signatures can enable smooth key upgrades later. The cost of complacency is an entire re-architecture under time pressure.

The Quantum Threat to ECDSA

Bitcoin and Ethereum rely on ECDSA over secp256k1 for signatures. Classical computers cannot feasibly derive private keys from public keys under ECDSA, but a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could. Shor’s algorithm runs in polynomial time on a quantum computer to solve the discrete log problem. In plain terms, a future quantum machine could compute your private key if it knows your public key.

The implications are staggering. As Vitalik points out,

An attacker could forge signatures and steal funds.

Any account that ever broadcasts a transaction has already revealed its public key on the blockchain. On Ethereum, that means virtually every active wallet is a “target in waiting.” Specifically:

Exposed keys: On Bitcoin, only UTXOs spent once reveal pubkeys. On Ethereum, every Externally Owned Account (EOA) exposes its pubkey when it sends its first transaction. Thus, millions of ETH addresses already have their pubkey published.
Immediate vulnerability: Once Shor’s algorithm is feasible, an adversary could take any snapshot of the blockchain and derive private keys for those addresses, emptying them. Finality (past transactions) doesn’t protect the funds in those accounts going forward.
Attack focus: Protocol keys are also at risk. Multi-sig admin wallets, validator signing keys, and bridge oracles all rely on classic crypto. If a QC brews in secret, those keys could be compromised from recorded traffic.

Importantly, this attack surface grows over time. Today’s quantum devices aren’t capable of this break, but hardware is improving. Vitalik cites Metaculus forecasts placing a dangerous machine possibly by the 2030s. We may well have only a decade to overhaul our crypto before funds are swept away.

Survey of Post-Quantum Signature Schemes

Fortunately, post-quantum cryptography (PQC) offers tools. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has selected and standardized several PQ signature schemes that resist quantum attacks. They fall mainly into two families: lattice-based and hash-based.

Lattice-based signatures: These include CRYSTALS-Dilithium and Falcon, both NIST finalists for standardization. They use hard problems on integer lattices. Dilithium (now FIPS 204) is designed for fast signing/verification with moderate key sizes. Falcon (FIPS 205 draft) uses NTRU lattices for smaller keys but more complex math. Both provide security comparable to ECDSA but require larger keys (e.g. 2–3 kilobit public keys). Performance is reasonable; Dilithium verification is very fast, while Falcon signs efficiently.
Hash-based signatures: These rely on one-way hash functions instead of number theory. The stateful XMSS or XMSS-MT schemes and the stateless SPHINCS+ have been developed for blockchain use. NIST has standardized SPHINCS+ (renamed SLH-DSA) as a backup PQ digital signature. Hash-based keys are very large (e.g. hundreds of kilobytes) and the signing process is heavier, but their security relies only on well-understood hash functions. Crucially, they are believed to survive quantum hashing threats (Grover’s algorithm only gives a quadratic speedup). Ethereum’s research shows that hash-based schemes like XMSS/SPHINCS+ are on its post-quantum roadmap.

Other approaches (code-based, multivariate) exist for encryption but are less practical for signatures in blockchains today. Lattice and hash-based are the pragmatic choices.

Many hybrid or “multi-sig” schemes have been proposed (e.g. combining an ECDSA and a Dilithium signature), but generally the community is leaning toward pure PQ schemes for final security.

A Dilithium public key might look like:

In contrast, a SPHINCS+ key would include a 32-byte hash public root (very small), but each signature is large (e.g. 8+ KB). These raw structures highlight why PQ crypto has heavier data sizes.

Migration Strategies and Best Practices

Given the risk, planning a crypto-agile transition is urgent. Several strategies can smooth the path:

Account abstraction / smart wallets: Ethereum is moving to account abstraction (ERC-4337, etc.), which allows smart contracts to define custom signature verification. This means wallets can be upgraded to check PQ signatures on-chain without a hard fork. We recommend teams explore smart contract wallets now. For example, a multisig contract could be deployed that initially trusts ECDSA keys, but can later switch to verifying Dilithium keys under certain conditions. This flexibility buys time and safety.
Dual-key accounts: Some designs propose having both an ECDSA key and a PQ key associated with an account. A transitional wallet might require signatures from either, or both, depending on mode. This way, funds can still be accessed normally today but will remain safe when quantum becomes reality (since the private PQ key remains secret until needed).
Cold storage & rotation: Immediately, users and custodians should move high-value coins to new keys generated only post-quantum (i.e. keys not reused from legacy systems). Even classical backups taken now (like snapshots of old private keys) could become liabilities under “harvest now, decrypt later” threats. Advisories by Citi and others stress that a layered, multi-year effort is needed.
Coordinate ecosystem upgrades: Protocols should prepare EIPs for PQ. For example, Ethereum’s roadmap lists candidate schemes (Falcon, Dilithium, SPHINCS+) and envisions a multi-stage rollout[11]. Multi-vendor testing and graceful fallback are key. In practice, long-term initiatives (like sharding or major upgrades) can bundle PQ transitions. Awareness is also vital: developers, wallet providers, and node operators must all prioritize PQ readiness.

Crucially, do not procrastinate. As the reports suggest,

Even if a cryptographic break is ~10–15 years away, the “lead time” for upgrading a global system is similarly long.

Waiting risks either being forced into a rushed, botched patch or facing catastrophic losses when Q-day hits. Remember: security today means preparing for tomorrow’s threats.
