TL;DR

Bridges hold enormous value. Blockchains now interoperate via bridges that lock up millions or even billions of dollars in pooled assets. Predictably, attackers have focused here: cross-chain bridges have been hacked for on the order of $2.5–2.8 B to date.
Recurring failure patterns: Almost every big bridge exploit traces back to a few key issues: small validator or key sets (single points of failure), fragile message verification, or designs where any valid cross-chain message can do unlimited damage.
Oracles are a silent hazard: Decentralized apps rely on price feeds and cross-chain data sources that can be manipulated. High-profile hacks (e.g. Mango Markets lost ~$115 M via a tainted price oracle, and SagaEVM’s Jan 2026 exploit turned on cross-chain oracles to steal $7 M) show how flawed oracles can cascade into huge losses.
Strong defenses exist: Projects should adopt formal verification of bridge/oracle logic (proving invariants in tools like VeraLang, ChainProof, etc.) and integrate continuous monitoring (on-chain anomaly detectors and circuit-breakers). Multi-party key management, strict transfer limits, and emergency pause mechanisms are also critical.

1. Bridges: High-Value Targets

Cross-chain bridges have become the linchpin of Web3 interoperability, and by extension, the most valuable honeypots. These bridges lock up vast sums of crypto.

For example,

Elliptic notes that “there is currently over $10 billion locked in via bridges”, and Chainlink Labs reports that over $2.8 B has already been stolen via bridge hacks (nearly 40% of all value stolen in Web3).

In short, bridging traffic is the money-on-the-move.

When bridges fail, they do so spectacularly. In 2022–2023 alone, Ronin ($600M), Wormhole ($320M), Nomad ($190M), Multichain (>$100M) and others made headlines. Even smaller bridges see losses, e.g. the CrossCurve multi-chain bridge lost about $3 M in early 2026. Lunaray’s security reports reinforce this picture. In January 2026, the SagaEVM hack ($7 M) directly exploited a cross-chain protocol vulnerability, and many stolen funds keep flowing through bridges.

These numbers aren’t a fluke. Every statistic shows cross-chain is where the big losses cluster. Exploitless’s analysis similarly warns that if you’re building cross-chain systems, you can’t treat them as “neutral plumbing”. A bridge bug can multiply across every connected chain, token, and application that relies on it. In practice, this means bridges (and the oracles they use) must get their own threat model and audit, separate from any single-chain logic.

2. Bridge Vulnerabilities: Common Attack Patterns

Bridge exploits tend to fall into a few recurring categories. Almost every major incident combines some of these root causes:

Broken keys & validator compromise

Most bridges rely on a small set of validators or keys. When a handful of signatures can approve any transfer, a single compromised key becomes catastrophic. In Ronin’s 2022 hack, attackers phished five of nine validator keys and approved two massive withdrawals (173,600 ETH + 25.5M USDC, roughly $540–620 M total). Similarly, in most bridge designs, a weak backup plan (e.g. an upgradable logic key) or co-located multisig can undo the whole system. The lesson: if a few keys control all the TVL, those keys are your protocol. Robust key management (for example, multi-party threshold crypto instead of single HSM accounts) is a must.

Fragile message verification

Bridges must carefully verify that an incoming cross-chain “message” was genuinely authorized on the source chain. Small bugs here can let attackers spoof or replay transactions. For example, in the 2022 Wormhole exploit, a misused Solana helper allowed an attacker to trick the bridge into accepting a forged guardian signature, minting $320M of wETH on Solana out of thin air. Likewise, Nomad’s 2022 hack turned every valid message into a replayable template, because an upgrade accidentally bypassed a crucial check.

A recent case shows this is still happening: in Feb 2026, the CrossCurve bridge lost ~$3M when its expressExecute call let attackers spoof cross-chain messages and withdraw tokens without depositing any collateral. In short, any gap in message authentication, whether a missing signature check, a deprecated library call, or a logic oversight, can turn “valid” inputs into a free pass. Bridges must do strict decoding and verification of every field in an incoming payload.

Unlimited trust in each message

Beyond keys and signatures, many bridges share a coding pattern like:

Here, after verifying the message’s origin, the contract simply executes it in full. If _executeMessage can, say, call any function or transfer arbitrary funds, a single message becomes all-powerful. In plain terms, many bridges have no rate limits, one well-crafted instruction can sweep the entire vault. Attackers have repeatedly exploited this: for example, having control of a signature on Ronin let hackers approve everything they wanted. As a defense, bridges should impose strict per-message limits so that a single step of the protocol cannot wipe out the treasure chest.

3. Oracles: A Silent Attack Surface

Alongside bridges, oracles are another hidden danger zone. Almost any DeFi app relies on price feeds or cross-chain data oracles, and if those can be fooled, even well-coded logic can break. Oracles by design connect to the real world (or another chain), so they require trust assumptions of their own.

In practice, attackers often manipulate oracles via flash loans, Sybil validators, or other multi-step schemes. A famous example: the Mango Markets incident (Oct 2022) where traders manipulated a lending protocol’s on-chain price oracles to mint $115 M in stablecoins. Similarly, Lunaray’s 2026 report details a $13–16M exploit on MatchaMeta, where the platform’s price oracle lacked real-time data verification or monitoring, allowing hackers to skew prices and drain funds.

Put simply, oracle feeds must not be trusted blindly. Any single delayed or compromised feed can poison a protocol. Decentralized feed networks (like Chainlink) help, but even they require multi-source checks and fallback mechanisms. For example, one defense is to combine a network feed with on-chain fallback checks or smoothing logic so that a sudden price spike won’t trigger a cascade. Without such guards, oracles are just as fatal a vulnerability as bridge contracts.

4. Defenses: Formal Verification & Runtime Monitoring

None of this is inevitable. The industry has developed concrete defenses to make cross-chain systems more resilient:

Formal Verification. Use mathematical proof tools to check that your bridge/oracle contracts meet critical invariants. Modern tools (VeraLang, ChainProof, Coq/Isabelle pipelines, etc.) can verify that undesirable states are unreachable (for example, that a bridge never mints without matching burn, or an oracle update never exceeds a sanity range). Integrating formal proofs early (before deployment) reduces the chance of subtle logic bugs slipping through.
Runtime Anomaly Monitoring. Instrument the system to catch unusual behavior in real time. For bridges, this means watching validator signatures, consensus patterns, and transfer volumes. Automated cross-chain monitoring systems can use machine learning or rule-based alerts on the fly. For example, modern IDS-like trackers look for inconsistent validator attestations or sudden large withdrawals and can pause the bridge if something smells off. On the oracle side, external sanity checks (e.g. comparing with other price sources) should run on every feed update. As one analysis notes, bridges often lack active monitoring: adding real-time checks and automated circuit-breakers can stop many attacks in progress.
Strict Key & Custody Controls. Employ multi-party signatures or threshold MPC so that no single machine holds full authority. Rotate keys regularly and keep them offline whenever possible. Our analysis recommends MPC over naive multisig, with threshold cryptography, signers can dynamically change without ever reconstructing a secret. In short, spread trust across many entities and require collaboration for any critical action.
Transfer Limits and “Circuit Breakers.” Constrain how much value can move in one operation or time period. For example, cap the maximum withdrawal per transaction, or enforce a daily outflow limit. This way, even if an attacker gains a signature, they can only drain a little at a time while alarms trigger.

One review flatly states: “Rate limiting is a simple yet underused defense… Without such limits, attackers can drain entire treasuries in one transaction”.

So, many protocols now include emergency pause functions and withdrawal schedules so that an exploit can be caught before all funds vanish.

These measures go hand-in-hand. A formally verified bridge contract with MPC security and transfer caps, combined with a live monitor feeding alerts, turns the cross-chain attack surface from a free-for-all into a guarded channel. In short, treating bridges and oracles as first-class security domains (with their own audits and defenses) is the key to stopping “steal from bridge” headlines.
