1. Why “getting an audit” is not the same as “doing security”

Most Web3 teams eventually reach the same moment: the code is close to production, integrations are piling up, and the question becomes unavoidable.

“Should we get an audit?”

The right answer is usually yes. But the more important question is what you expect that audit to do.

If you expect an audit to be a ceremonial stamp that makes risk disappear, you’ll be disappointed. If you expect an audit to behave like a high-signal engineering partnership that forces clarity, exposes blind spots, and leaves your system objectively safer than it was before, you’re thinking about it the right way.

A good security partnership is less like buying a certificate and more like inviting someone to challenge your assumptions before attackers do.

2. Step zero: the initial call is not sales, it’s alignment

The first call should feel like technical discovery, not a pitch.

A serious audit partner will try to understand what you are building in plain language first: what holds value, what can move value, what depends on external systems, and what your “worst day” looks like. You’ll be asked about trust boundaries: who can upgrade, who can pause, what keys exist, and what off-chain infrastructure touches your on-chain state.

This is where teams often learn their first uncomfortable lesson: they haven’t actually written down their threat model. Everyone has a mental picture of how the system works, but it’s not unified or explicit. That gap is where most critical audit findings are born.

A good initial call also prevents wasted audits. If the code is still changing daily, or the architecture is not settled, you may be better off doing a short pre-audit review first and scheduling the full audit when the design is stable enough to be meaningfully reviewed.

3. Scoping: what’s in, what’s out, and what’s frozen

Smart contract audits fail quietly when scope is vague.

A real process will lock a specific commit hash (or tagged release) as the audit target. It will define what contracts are in scope, what dependencies are assumed, and what is explicitly out of scope. It will also clarify whether the audit is focused on core protocol contracts, integrations, or both.

This step is more than project management. Scope is where “we thought you were checking that” gets eliminated. If a bridge adapter, an oracle router, or an upgrade manager sits outside scope, the report should say so plainly. Otherwise, teams walk away with false confidence.

4. Threat modeling: where the audit really begins

For many teams, this is the highest leverage part of the partnership.

Threat modeling means writing down the most important assumptions in your system and testing them mentally before testing them in code. Examples:

If this oracle lies, what happens.
If this multisig is compromised, what can be upgraded.
If this external protocol changes behavior, what breaks.
If a user behaves adversarially and tries to self-liquidate or manipulate accounting, where are the weak points.

This is also where we separate “bugs” from “design failures.” Many of the most expensive incidents weren’t caused by a missing require statement. They were caused by a missing or incomplete threat model.

5. The audit work: more than tools, more than line-by-line review

A good audit is a blend of careful manual reasoning and tool assistance.

Tools are useful for surfacing known vulnerability patterns and suspicious constructs, but they don’t understand your economic logic, your integration assumptions, or your protocol’s intended invariants. The real value comes from humans tracing how your system behaves across sequences of calls, edge cases, and adversarial flows.

A high-quality partner will spend time on things that don’t show up in basic scans:

How privilege is distributed across roles and contracts.
How upgrade paths could be abused or rushed.
Where integrations create implicit trust.
Which invariants must always hold for solvency or safety.
How errors, rounding, and state transitions behave under stress.

This is also why good audits often feel like engineering conversations. You’ll get questions, not just findings. “Why is this role allowed to do that?” “What if this call happens in this order?” “Who can do this in production?”

6. Deliverables: what you should actually expect to receive

You should expect a report that is readable, actionable, and honest about limitations.

A strong audit report typically includes:

A clear scope section (what was audited and what wasn’t).
A short methodology description (how the review was performed).
Findings grouped by severity, with impact explained in real terms.
Concrete remediation guidance, not just “fix it.”
Explicit assumptions and risk acceptances, if any.

Most importantly, you should expect the audit to produce changes, not only documentation. The report is the vehicle. The outcome is safer code and safer design.

7. Remediation and re-test: where partnerships prove they’re real

Many teams underestimate this phase.

Fixing findings is often harder than finding them, because fixes can introduce new edge cases or break assumptions elsewhere. A strong partner will work with you through remediation, then re-test the exact fixes and mark them as verified.

This step is where audits stop being theoretical. It’s the difference between “we addressed it” and “we know it’s addressed.”

8. What changes you should see in your stack after a good audit

If the partnership is working, you should feel a shift in your engineering posture.

Not “we are invincible,” but:

You have clearer trust boundaries and less hidden admin power.
Upgrade paths are safer, slower, and more observable.
Core invariants are written down and tested.
Integrations are treated as attack surfaces, not conveniences.
Your team shares one threat model instead of five informal ones.
